An Exploration as to Why Creatives and Musicians Take On Multiple Jobs
Musicians and creatives having multiple jobs… is that because they feel more satisfied working on various projects, or is it out of necessity?
We think it may be a little bit of both. Even creatives with a full-time job still feel the nagging thought:
“Maybe this role won’t be funded by the government in a year and I’m out,” or “Maybe the company will want to go in a different direction and I’ll be let go.”
Even with a full-time role, do creatives in the industry always feel like their job is safe?
So enter… “multiple jobs.”
We think many artists, creatives, musicians, and actors take on multiple jobs out of fear that their full-time role will disappear, to supplement their income because their full-time job doesn’t pay enough, or because their dream role or gig is only part-time — so they need another job to stay afloat. The list goes on.
What’s the solution here?
How can someone feel safer in their position or gig?
Whose job is it to make sure employees/contractors feel fairly compensated?
Well, now we’re definitely discussing a systemic issue.
We think there are more questions than answers here — but it’s something we hope to explore more in this column, to spark deeper conversation and hopefully generate ideas around this “wicked problem.”
