New Music Friday - Jennifer King
British/Canadian Classical pianist, Jennifer King’s newest album Souvenance is a collection of nocturnes, romances, and meditations grounded in the romantic era, and branching into the 20th century. Recorded in Jennifer’s living room by Stonehouse Sound, Souvenance invites the listener to sit on the piano bench beside her for a deeply personal experience of the music, which is all composed by women.
Including rarely heard music by Ethel Smyth, Sophie-Carmen Eckhardt-Gramatté, Clara Wieck-Schumann (her beloved Notturno) and Jennifer’s own meditation on Joni Mitchell’s Blue, the album is an introspective journey rich with heartbreak, hope, strength, and tenderness. Other featured composers are Mel Bonis, Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel, Dana Suesse, and Cécile Chaminade.
The album was co-produced by Jennifer King and John D. S. Adams, who is also the Recording Engineer. The album has a companion booklet, a journal designed by Andrea Ledwell, which includes the album track list and annotation of the composers included in the recording.
Spirited and sensitive, Jennifer King is a British/Canadian award-winning pianist who has established herself on concert stages across Canada and can be heard frequently on CBC Radio 2. Winner of Classical Album of the Year at the 2024 East Coast Music Awards, she currently hosts, curates and performs in Cecilia Concerts’ Sensory Accessible Series, now in its fourth season.
