Back in the 18th and 19th centuries, people listened to the music being written in their own time. It wasn’t called “New Music”—it was just music.
Somewhere along the way, that shifted.
We revere the Greats—and yes, they earned that—but why does honoring them often come at the expense of everyone writing music today?
Why do so many living composers feel invisible?
We don’t need to keep programming the same pieces over and over. Other genres don’t do this. Pop, indie, rap—they pay respect to their roots, but they don’t live in them. They evolve. They take risks. They move.
